Backup & Restore

This guide explains how backup and restore works in FinyxFin so you can protect your financial data, create recovery points, and restore safely when needed.

âš ī¸ Important

Backup and restore depend on your device, iCloud availability, storage space, and system conditions. Restore success is not guaranteed in all scenarios. For extra safety, keep independent CSV exports of important data in a location you control.

🔒 Privacy Note

FinyxFin does not have access to, view, or store your backup data. All backups remain within your device or your personal iCloud storage under your control. When backups are stored in iCloud, they are governed by Apple's privacy and data handling policies.

đŸ›Ąī¸ Overview

FinyxFin protects your financial data through a two-layer backup system: a Device Safety Backup stored locally on your device, and a Sync Backup stored in your iCloud. Together they create Restore Points — timestamped snapshots of your data that you can browse, name, protect, and restore from at any time.

📱

Device Safety Backup

Fast local copy — works offline, no internet needed

☁ī¸

Sync Backup

iCloud copy — accessible from all your Apple devices

🔄

Automatic Backups

Runs at app launch on your chosen schedule

đŸ›Ąī¸

Safety Snapshots

Auto-created before every restore to protect current data

đŸŸĸ Protection Health Status

The Data Protection screen shows a protection health indicator so you always know how well-covered your data is:

Status Meaning
đŸŸĸ Fully Protected A backup exists in both Device Safety and Sync Backup, created within the last 48 hours
🟠 Partially Protected Only one storage location has a backup, or the most recent backup is 2–7 days old
🔴 Not Protected No backup found, or the most recent backup is older than 7 days

đŸ“Ļ The Two Backup Layers

📱 Device Safety Backup

Stored locally on this device only.

  • Available offline — no internet required
  • Fastest to create and restore from
  • Lost if the device is lost or the app is deleted

📁 On My Device → FinyxFin → Backups

☁ī¸ Sync Backup

Stored in your personal iCloud Drive.

  • Accessible from any of your Apple devices
  • Survives app deletion and device loss
  • Requires iCloud to be signed in and available

📁 iCloud Drive → FinyxFin → Backups

✅ Best Protection: Keep Both Enabled

With both layers active, you're covered even if iCloud is unavailable (Device Safety Backup handles it) and even if you lose your device (Sync Backup handles it).

🔄 Automatic Backups

FinyxFin creates backups automatically each time you open the app, once the configured interval has passed.

Frequency Options

Option Interval
Twice Daily Every 12 hours
Daily (Recommended) Every 24 hours
Weekly Every 7 days
Monthly Every 30 days

Automatic backups also run in these situations regardless of the schedule:

  • Before any restore — Safety Snapshot of current data (if enabled)
  • Before data reset — Final backup created before wiping data
â„šī¸ Cross-Device Tracking

The timestamp of the last automatic backup is stored in iCloud so all your devices stay in sync — if one device just ran a backup, other devices won't duplicate it unnecessarily.

➕ Creating a Restore Point

Create a restore point manually at any time — especially before bulk imports, large deletions, or device transfers.

1

Open Settings → Data Protection

Navigate to the Data Protection screen

2

Tap Create Restore Point

The large button at the bottom of the screen

3

Add a Name (Optional)

Give it a memorable label like "Before January Import"

4

Wait for Confirmation

The restore point is saved to both Device Safety Backup and Sync Backup simultaneously

📋 Browsing Restore Points

Tap View Restore Points in Data Protection to see a timeline of all your backups, newest first, grouped by month.

What Each Restore Point Shows

  • Timestamp — Date and time the backup was created
  • Type — Manual, Automatic, or Safety Snapshot
  • Device — Which device created this backup (iPhone, iPad, Mac)
  • Size — File size of the backup
  • Storage Locations — Chips showing Device and/or iCloud availability
  • Recommended Badge — The most recent non-safety restore point is marked for you
  • Protected Badge — Shows if the restore point is protected from auto-deletion
  • Custom Name — Your label if you added one

Restore Point Actions

Right-click (Mac) or long-press (iPhone/iPad) a restore point to access:

  • Rename — Add or change the custom label
  • Protect / Unprotect — Prevent or allow automatic deletion
  • Remove Name — Clear the custom label
  • Restore — Begin the restore flow from this point

Safety Snapshots

Safety Snapshots are auto-created just before every restore. They appear in a collapsed Advanced section at the bottom of the list — hidden by default to keep the main list clean. You can protect safety snapshots from deletion just like regular restore points.

🔄 Restoring from a Restore Point

âš ī¸ Restoring Replaces All Current Data

A restore completely replaces your current data with the backup. A safety snapshot of your current state is created automatically before the restore begins (if enabled).

The Restore Flow

1

Select a Restore Point

Open Restore Points and tap the restore point you want. The Recommended restore point is a good starting choice.

2

Preview

Review the restore point details — timestamp, type, source device, size, and which storage locations it's available from. FinyxFin automatically selects the best source (Device Safety Backup preferred for speed; falls back to Sync Backup if unavailable).

3

Safety Notice & Confirm

Review the safety steps FinyxFin will take. Confirm to proceed — this creates the safety snapshot of your current data first.

4

Restore in Progress

Don't close the app while the restore is running.

5

Reload FinyxFin

Tap "Reload FinyxFin" to apply the restored data. Your pre-restore data is saved as a Safety Snapshot in case you need to go back.

â„šī¸ What Gets Restored

A restore brings back all accounts, transactions, bills, loans, goals, budgets, investments, custom categories, and app settings that existed when the backup was created.

âš™ī¸ Backup Settings

Adjust these settings in Settings → Data Protection:

Setting Default Notes
Sync Backup On Copies backups to iCloud Drive
Device Safety Backup On Stores backups locally on this device
Automatic Backups On Creates backups automatically on your chosen schedule
Backup Frequency Daily Twice Daily, Daily, Weekly, or Monthly
Keep Backups For 90 Days 30, 60, 90 days, or Keep All
Safety Snapshot Before Restore On Auto-saves current data before any restore. Strongly recommended.
💡 Automatic Cleanup

Up to 10 restore points are kept per storage location. When a new backup is created, older ones beyond your retention period are removed automatically. Restore points you've marked as Protected are never auto-deleted.

Platform-Specific Options

đŸ–Ĩī¸ Mac

  • Open Sync Backup Folder — Opens the iCloud Drive backup folder in Finder
  • Open Safety Backup Folder — Opens the local backup folder in Finder

📱 iPhone & iPad

  • Export Latest Backup — Shares the most recent restore point via the system share sheet (AirDrop, Files, etc.)

đŸ—‘ī¸ Reset App vs. Delete All Data

FinyxFin offers two data-clearing options in Settings → Data Management → Danger Zone. They are very different:

↊ī¸ Reset App

Clears this device only. iCloud data is preserved.

  • Removes all local data from this device
  • iCloud data and Sync Backups remain untouched
  • Data will re-sync from iCloud when you reopen the app
  • Useful for troubleshooting sync issues

đŸ—‘ī¸ Delete All Data

Permanently erases everything — device and iCloud. Cannot be undone.

  • Deletes all data from this device and all iCloud records
  • Deletes all local and iCloud backups
  • Resets all app settings to factory defaults
  • All other devices detect the deletion and clear their local data
âš ī¸ Delete All Data Requires Typing "DELETE"

To prevent accidental deletion, the Delete All Data button only activates after you type the word DELETE (uppercase) into a confirmation field. This action cannot be undone — not even by FinyxFin support.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often are automatic backups created?
By default, once every 24 hours when you open the app. You can change this to Twice Daily, Weekly, or Monthly in Settings → Data Protection.
Q: How many restore points are kept?
Up to 10 per storage location (Device Safety and Sync Backup separately). Older backups beyond your retention period are automatically removed. Restore points you've protected are never auto-deleted.
Q: Can I prevent a restore point from being auto-deleted?
Yes. Long-press (iPhone/iPad) or right-click (Mac) the restore point and select Protect. A protected restore point will never be removed automatically — only when you delete it manually.
Q: What is a Safety Snapshot?
A Safety Snapshot is automatically created right before any restore begins. It captures your current data so you can recover if the restore doesn't produce the result you expected. Safety Snapshots appear in the collapsed Advanced section of the Restore Points list.
Q: What happens if I delete the app?
Local Device Safety Backups are deleted with the app. However, Sync Backups in iCloud Drive remain. Reinstall the app, sign in with the same Apple ID, and your iCloud restore points will appear in the list.
Q: Can I restore on a new device?
Yes. Install FinyxFin on the new device and sign in with the same Apple ID. Sync Backup restore points from iCloud will automatically appear in the Restore Points list.
Q: Are backups secure?
Yes. Local backups are protected by iOS device encryption. iCloud backups are secured by Apple's iCloud security, including end-to-end encryption when Advanced Data Protection is enabled on your Apple ID.
Q: What's the difference between Reset App and Delete All Data?
Reset App clears data on this device only — your iCloud data stays safe and re-syncs when you reopen the app. Delete All Data permanently erases everything from both this device and iCloud, including all backups. It cannot be undone.
Q: Will restoring affect my Premium subscription?
No. Your subscription is linked to your Apple ID, not your data. Restoring a backup won't affect your subscription status.
Q: Do backups work offline?
Creating and restoring from Device Safety Backups works completely offline. Sync Backup (iCloud) requires internet connectivity.
