πŸ›‘οΈ Your Data is Protected

Important

Backup and restore depend on your device, iCloud availability, storage space, and system conditions. Restore success is not guaranteed in all scenarios. For extra safety, keep independent exports of important data in a location you control.

Note

iCloud sync is handled by Apple’s iCloud services. Availability and sync behavior can vary based on your Apple ID, device settings, connectivity, and Apple service status.

FinyxFin automatically backs up your financial data to protect against data loss. Whether you accidentally delete something, switch to a new device, or experience a technical issue β€” your data can typically be recovered.

πŸ“Š Backup Configuration

Here's how FinyxFin manages your backups to balance safety and storage:

24h
Backup Frequency
10
Max Backups Kept
2
Storage Locations
~20
Total Max Files
Setting Value Description
Automatic Frequency Every 24 hours One backup per day when you use the app
Max Backups (Local) 10 files Stored on your device in app container
Max Backups (iCloud) 10 files Synced to iCloud Drive (if enabled)
Backup Format .sqlite Complete database snapshot
Filename Format 2025-01-11T14-30-45.sqlite Date and time embedded in filename
πŸ“¦ Storage Estimate

Each backup is roughly the same size as your database. For most users with 1,000-5,000 transactions, this means about 2-10 MB per backup, totaling 40-200 MB across all backups.

βš™οΈ How Backups Work

Automatic Backups

FinyxFin creates backups automatically in these situations:

  • Daily: Once every 24 hours when you open the app
  • Before Restore: Safety backup created before any restore operation
  • Before Premium Transitions: When upgrading or downgrading subscription
  • Before Data Reset: Final backup before deleting all data

Automatic Cleanup

To prevent backups from filling up your storage:

  • Only the 10 most recent backups are kept in each location
  • Older backups are automatically deleted when new ones are created
  • Cleanup happens separately for local and iCloud storage
  • You typically have at least 10 days of backup history
βœ… Reliable Timestamps

Backup dates are stored in the filename itself (e.g., 2025-01-10T15-30-45.sqlite), ensuring accurate timestamps even after file operations or iCloud sync.

βž• Creating a Manual Backup

While FinyxFin backs up automatically, you can create a manual backup anytime:

1

Open Settings

Go to Settings β†’ Backup & Restore

2

Create Backup

Tap "Create Backup Now"

3

Wait for Confirmation

A checkmark confirms your backup was created successfully

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip

Create a manual backup before making major changes like bulk imports, large deletions, or transferring to a new device.

πŸ”„ Restoring from a Backup

Need to recover your data? Follow these steps:

⚠️ Important

Restoring a backup will replace ALL current data. A safety backup of your current data is created automatically before the restore.

1

Open Settings

Go to Settings β†’ Backup & Restore

2

Choose a Backup

Tap on a backup from the list. Backups show date, time, size, and location (device or iCloud)

3

Confirm Restore

Review the backup details and tap "Restore"

4

App Restarts

FinyxFin will restart automatically with your restored data

πŸ“€ Exporting & Importing Backups

Exporting to iCloud Drive

Export a backup for safekeeping outside the app:

1

Select a Backup

In Backup & Restore, tap the share icon next to any backup

2

Choose Destination

Save to iCloud Drive, AirDrop to another device, or share via other apps

Importing from Files

Restore from an exported backup file:

1

Find Your Backup File

Open the Files app and locate your .sqlite backup file

2

Open with FinyxFin

Tap the file and choose "Open with FinyxFin" or use Share β†’ FinyxFin

3

Confirm Import

FinyxFin will ask if you want to restore from this backup

πŸ“ Where Are Backups Stored?

πŸ“± On Your Device (Local)

Primary backup location stored securely on your device:

  • βœ… Protected by iOS encryption
  • βœ… Included in your iCloud device backup
  • βœ… Available offline without internet
  • βœ… Only accessible by FinyxFin
  • πŸ“ Path: On My iPhone β†’ FinyxFin β†’ Backups

☁️ iCloud Drive (Automatic Sync)

If iCloud Drive is enabled, backups are also stored in the cloud:

  • βœ… Accessible from any Apple device
  • βœ… Survives app deletion
  • βœ… Easy to share between devices
  • βœ… Visible in Files app
  • πŸ“ Path: iCloud Drive β†’ FinyxFin β†’ Backups
πŸ”’ Privacy Note

Your backups never leave your control. They're stored only on YOUR device and optionally in YOUR iCloud Drive. We never see or access your backup data.

πŸ†˜ Automatic Data Recovery

If FinyxFin detects data issues (like an empty database after a sync problem), it will automatically show a recovery screen:

Recovery Options

  • Automatic Recovery: Restore from the most recent backup with one tap
  • Choose Backup: Select a specific backup to restore
  • View Diagnostics: See detailed information about your data status
  • Contact Support: Get help from our team with diagnostic info attached
βœ… Safety First

Before any restore, FinyxFin creates a safety backup of your current data β€” even if it appears empty. This helps you can typically go back if needed.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How often are automatic backups created?
Once every 24 hours when you open the app. If you don't open the app for several days, a backup will be created the next time you launch it.
Q: How many backups are kept?
FinyxFin keeps the 10 most recent backups in each storage location (local device and iCloud Drive). Older backups are automatically deleted to save space. This gives you roughly 10+ days of backup history.
Q: How much space do backups use?
Each backup is roughly the same size as your database. For most users (1,000-5,000 transactions), this is about 2-10 MB per backup. With 10 local + 10 iCloud backups, total storage is typically 40-200 MB.
Q: Can I disable automatic backups?
Yes, you can toggle "Automatic Backups" in Settings β†’ Backup & Restore. However, we strongly recommend keeping this enabled for data safety.
Q: What happens if I delete the app?
Local backups stored on your device will be deleted with the app. However, backups in iCloud Drive remain even after app deletion. We recommend keeping iCloud Drive enabled for this extra protection.
Q: Can I restore on a new device?
Yes! If iCloud Drive is enabled, your backups will automatically appear on your new device. Alternatively, export a backup to iCloud Drive or use AirDrop to transfer the file manually.
Q: Are backups secure?
Absolutely! All local backups are encrypted using iOS's built-in encryption. iCloud Drive backups are protected by Apple's end-to-end encryption when Advanced Data Protection is enabled.
Q: Will restoring affect my Premium subscription?
No. Your Premium subscription is linked to your Apple ID, not your data. Restoring a backup won't affect your subscription status.
Q: Why do some backups show "iCloud" location?
FinyxFin stores backups in both locations simultaneously. The "iCloud" badge indicates the backup is synced to iCloud Drive and accessible from other devices.
Q: Do backups work offline?
Yes! Creating and restoring local backups works completely offline. Only iCloud sync requires internet connectivity.

✨ Best Practices

πŸ“…

Monthly Exports

Export a backup monthly to iCloud Drive for extra safety
